I'm old. As I get older I find myself getting more cynical. It happens. I of course try hard to hold true to my beliefs and to keep trying to keep as much as I can diy and to live my ideals, but sometimes it gets hard. Between Resistance and Community is a breath of fresh air in my hardening existence.
It focuses on the diy community in Long Island and the basement shows, kick ball in parking lots and sense of community that comes with it. It follows a couple of the bands on tour as they find similar communities across the country. To watch this takes me back to when I was in their place and it gives me hope knowing that these communities spring up everywhere and empower kids who didn't have a say.
Of course it all isn't roses. For the most part the scene is white boys. They are not racist or inherently sexist, but the scene has sprung up that way, the same as it usually does all over the country and the world. Interesting bonus material features the girls of the scene talking about the sexism that was inherent in the scene and how they wish they would have handled it. There is no real answer here. It is frustrating to me to see that 26 years after 7 Seconds put out "Not Just Boys Fun" the problem they addressed is still alive in the scene.
The second issue of sustainability as some bands get greater success and folks grow older and move away or go to college is also addressed in the follow up material. It is interesting to hear the guys from Latterman talk about how their world view has changed as they've grown older. Their point of view and that of others who did follow up interviews gives me hope. While they changed their perspective none of them let go of their diy roots. It still informs them.
This video will inspire you and give you hope. Those rock dinosaurs The Who are right, the kids are alright. The follow up will give you hope that you can grow older and keep fighting the fight as long as you don't let the cynicism take over.
