It's September 21, 1989 and Hurricane Hugo hits Lystra, North Carolina. They are not in the eye of the hurricane, but as the flood waters rise so does the drama in Lystra. Not high drama, but little drama, everyday life kind of drama comes bubbling over.
Nic Brown is a great writer because soon you are reading the book and you don't notice the writing, what you notice is the voice of the characters. Brown is able to develop characters in very few words.
This book is a snapshot of one night in a small town, so a lot of characters are developed. Some interact throughout the book, some do not. This is not a story where there is one story arc told in the book, there are several small stories all influenced by the storm. Just like real life, the stories do not come to an end, instead you get a bit of many stories most of which do not have what seems like a traditional climax.
Those looking for a traditional story might be a little disappointment but those looking for fully developed characters will be very satisfied.
